It’s not unusual for a red wine enthusiast to enjoy a nice glass of red wine with his/her dinner, but can a glass or two of red wine actually have some health benefits as well? Well, believe it or not, wine enthusiasts may have a great reason to keep having a glass or two at dinner! Red wine benefits actually go further than merely enhancing the flavour of certain foods.
Resveratrol is a chemical compound in red wine, and it has garnered a lot of attention over the last decade. The alleged anti-aging properties of reservatrol has got a lot of wine enthusiasts and scientists very interested!. When lab rats were injected with resveratrol, the process of aging in the mice almost stopped completely!
Is this the only thing going for it? Having resveratrol in it is just one of the benefits. Red wine also have heaps of antioxidants as well. By having these antioxidants, the body raises the levels of “good” cholesterol which protects the body against damage to arteries, thus lowering the risk of heart disease. And to think that you were actually helping to lower your rate of heart disease by enjoying a glass or two!
You now know they exist, but do you know what these antioxidants actually are? They are a large group of chemicals known as polyphenols and have two distinct groups: flavonoids and non-flavonoids. The lining of blood vessels gets a lot of protection from antioxidants, which is one of the best benefits. Resveratrol is one of the key ingredients and it also helps by lowering the “bad” cholesterol in the body, thus preventing the formation of blood clots. However, more research will need to be done first, but it looks very promising!
Before you get the idea you can now drink wine by the gallon and still be safe, you should be cautious. Any doctor will say that excessive alcohol consumption has a harmful effect on the body, especially on the liver. Even though doctors realise all the health benefits, they will also recommend that consumption be kept to no more than 2 glasses per day, preferably only one. But even with this restriction on consumption, most people only drink one or two glasses of wine at dinner anyway, so why not enjoy some of the health benefits as well.
If you don’t drink alcohol for either religious or cultural reasons, you can still take advantage of the health benefits of red wine. Drug and supplement companies are now able to manufacture a synthetic and condensed version of resveratrol and are able to put it into a dissolvable pill. By taking it in a pill form, you can get all the health benefits without needing to drink the two glasses each day!
There are many benefits of red wine, and enhancing the taste of dinner is just one of them. If you limit your consumption to no more than two glasses per day, you can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and heart attacks. It also has the added benefit of lowering the “bad” cholesterol levels, while at the same time, increasing the levels of “good” cholesterol, which has the combined effect of reducing the chances of blood clots forming in blood vessels. However, to fully take advantage of the health benefits of red wine, moderation is the key!
