Well, as you know 4:2:2 is one of three basic variations used in video transmission, and carries more chrominance data that the 'standard' 4:2:0 format. It's used primarily in professional applications - in studios and on direct feeds etc.

I've not heard anything about it's use being limited or stopped in any regard, so I'd have to say that I don't see it coming.

Indeed, there is a 'High 4:2:2 Profile' included in the MPEG-4 H.264 specifications, so it's unlikely to disappear as a format. It will be interesting to see if 4:2:2 MPEG-4 is ever used for feed uplinks/downlinks. I've not seen one yet - have you?

I do see a general (if bizarre) trend in these days of increasing high definition content towards reducing bitrates/bandwidth/picture quality, but spet uses are a different ballgame IMO.

Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet ~ Dave Barry

4:2:2's as alive as 4-4-2 is in the Premier League. The biggest savings will come from MPEG-4 and using a 1.333 PAR, not from getting rid of 4:2:2.

I reckon there be some sort of change here. Those of us who go back to the alog days,& mpeg2 came in,feeds were 4.2.0.Then after 4.2.2..Now mpeg4 is showing on some feeds,im sure time will change on how some feeds are seen. This does not mean other formats will be gone, just another way 2 make things a bit harder 2 veiw.I have veiwed a few things on mpeg4 by t/s hd card.
